Counter Punch

Fighting Game on Mobile Devices

The Greatest Fights Are In Your Hands

Counter Punch is a Top Down 2D Fighting Game made for mobile devices. This project started as an experiment to see if it was possible for two players to share one mobile screen for a game. The main focus is to bring the depth found on traditional fighting games like Street Fighter and Tekken to mobile devices. Counter Punch bridges this gap by treating typical touchscreen inputs like inputs on a controller. The game takes the tapping, holding, and swiping actions of the player as separate inputs. Each character has a unique moveset and play style.

Roles:

 -Game Director

 -Programmer

 -Animator

 -UI/UX Designer

Above is a showcase of the unique moveset of each character, their combo potential, and how to preform the touchscreen inputs on the device

Above is the trailer for the main character, Taro Yamada.

The biggest challenge when designing the game was designing the UI to accommodate both player positions. My greatest fear was having everything feel too crowded.

Game Jams of 2020

Fly Together

1 month Game Jam project

"Friends are an extension of your strength. And you theirs"

Fly Together is a side scrolling hack and slash developed within a month of a Secret Santa Game Jam. With this jam, the topic was given to you through a letter of one of the other participants. This letter will give you any subjects, gameplay preferences, or backstory that the participants would use to build the game.

The letter that inspired Fly Together was about a man who enjoyed walking through a local park with his wife. They enjoyed listening to the local wildlife and had a particular enjoyment of viewing birds. When checking out the writer's previous game, Birds of a Feather, I was inspired to make a homage to that game and their love for birds.

Fly Together is a story of a Blue Jay trying to return home from a dense and dark forest. While he tries to escape, he meets and befriends other birds imprisoned by the forest. Together they fly through the forest and fight the hostile inhabitants.

Roles:

 -Game Director

 -Programmer

 -Animator

 -UI/UX Designer

A highlight of Fly Together is the assist system. With a directional input and a button press, one of Bluejay's friends will come in and attack the enemy.

Each boss was designed with unique attacks that tests the knowledge of the system mechanics. Above is the second boss fight, Goose Howard, a large bird with the ability to create fire from his feathers.

Mech Fighter

1 month Game Jam project

"Systems Critical - Retreat Impossible - Only Option: Combat"

MechIconpng.png

Mech Fighter is a 2D Fighting Game where both players pilot a run down mech that constantly needs to be repaired.

Rebecca is a talented mechanic and engineer that revolutionized the field of robotics by developing EDDY. When news goes out of her creation, she gets kidnapped by a private military company in order to create more EDDYs for the military. While captured she befriends one of her guards, Keira.

Rebecca, having stolen EDDY, is now trying to escape the facility but is stopped by her friend Sara in one of the newer models.

Roles:

 -Game Director

 -Programmer

 -Animator

 -UI/UX Designer

The emphasis in Mech Fighter is constant repairs you must perform on your mech. Overheating and Jams negatively impacts the mech and gives the opponent an advantage. During the fight you can choose to eject the pilot and perform actions that restores health, cools down, or fixes jams.

There are 4 unique endings to Mech Fighter that are based on who won the match and the health value of the winner.
